This term we welcomed Brett Lee to our combined St Benedict's Primary and College Communities to present student, teacher and parent sessions aimed at skilling all members of our community to navigate and manage the online world safely and responsibly. Brett was clear that he is NOT anti-internet and spoke of the great benefits to having a family life that is balanced, with clear boundaries when accessing the online world.
Brett comes, not with an educational background, but with a law-enforcement background and helps him provide a unique perspective and relay facts about some of the dangers posed when children go online. Brett was a Queensland Police Officer for 22 years, 16 of which as a detective in the field of Child Exploitation. Brett has been personally involved with the interview, location, arrest and prosecution of hundreds of online criminals and predators (89 of which were adult men in the Brisbane area). He also had the opportunity to work overseas with the FBI and Homeland Security in the United States of America. Brett shared 5 key messages for students for safe internet use, and these are the same messages for all students Brett works with (Yrs P – 12).
